Why Are You Being Asked To Do This Assignment?

Excellent question - I'm asking you to do this because I want to assess how much you understand about dramatic structure. You'll notice that this is one of the learning outcomes for the course. If I did my job well, you will be able to easily, with variable degrees of ability, respond to all of the prompts I'm asking.

What Are You Doing for This Assignment?

• You are writing a response paper to the following prompts.
• You are being asked to refer directly to the play The Rising of the Moon.
  • This means I would like to see "quotes" from the play, specific lines or moments
• The format of the paper is informal, which means I'm not asking for any distinct formatting such as margins or line spacing. Make the paper how you would like to make it. 
• Make the paper as long as needed. No page length or word count.
• No need to cite any sources. The only source is the play and I know what that is.

What I would like submitted

I would love for you to write your responses using a word processing platform such as Word. (Go into your 365 site from the Blue Tiger Portal) If you want to submit it as a PDF, that's fine. 

What I would NOT like submitted

I do not want to see a photo of your handwritten assignment. I know some professors accept this, I am not one of those. Avoid any strange or uncommon software packages such as Pages, they just gunk up the process.

How Are You Graded on This Assignment?

As noted elsewhere in this course, I'm looking to see if you meet an 85% threshold on meeting the assignment goals. This means, if you reply to all the prompts and succeed in 85% of clarity, noting specific moments in the play, and decent punctuation/grammar/spelling/etc. then you will have MET the assignment.

If you don't meet that threshold I will inform you along with ways to improve and you will have a chance to revise the work.

When Is This Assignment Due?

Now! As soon as you can will be your best friend. However, you do have until July 1 @ 11:59 CDT to submit something, or resubmit something. After that day and time, this assignment goes dark and you won't be able to do anything about it.

What Are The Prompts You Need to Respond To?

• The inciting incident is the policemen placing notices for a wanted man, what would you describe as the first point of conflict within the play?
• What bits of information did you get from the dialog where you learned more about the situation and characters? (Exposition info)
• At what point would you say is the climax of this story? Why did you choose that moment?
• What does each character want? (No, really, what do the ultimately want? To escape is not the best answer. To catch the escaped convict is not the best answer.) Sergeant? Ragged Man? Why do you say that?
• Of all the things that could be a theme, what did you take from this play? What's the message for an audience and what in the play makes you suggest this?
