Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Outline and explain the major historical developments of United States History through the Reconstruction Era
  • Identify and evaluate how different regions of the nation developed from the pre-colonial era to the United States Civil War
  • Explain how the political, economic, and social revolutions of the early 19th century impacted the growth of the American nation
  • Describe how the ideas and experiences of diverse groups and political actors impacted the development of the nation

Course Objectives

Study of this course is intended inculcate an ability:

  • To understand the cultures of the Native American, European and African peoples who populated the British colonies on the American continent. 
  • To examine the ways in which the new American republic developed and expanded politically and geographically.
  • To explore the economic and political changes as well as the sectional differences that lead to the Civil War
  • To assess and explain the conduct and outcomes of Reconstruction

Canvas

Canvas is the Learning Management System that we use for our courses. You can login into Canvas in the campus portal. Login with your LU user name and password (same as for WebAdvisor or mylincolnu email). You will find a number of tutorials for Canvas.

Inman E. Page Library

The University Library is the hub of academic research and study.  Two of the assignments will require academic research to complete and Page Library will be the center of that research.  In addition, most academic tutoring services are located there.  Please familiarize yourself with the library and its services and resources.

Course Instructor

Your instructor is here not only to help educate you on the subject you are enrolled in but also to help you make good decisions regarding courses related issues - missing classes, submitting assignments, taking exams.  Please consult your instructor on issues relating to your course work and course particiaption before and during times you are having problems.

Assessment  Activities

Chapter Quizzes (150 points/ 10 points each)

  • You will have quizzes for the 15 chapters of the textbook to assess your reading recall.  The quizzes will be taken outside of class in Canvas.  You will have three chances to make the maximum score before the quiz closes.  The chapter quizzes will not be reopened once the time expires.

Exams (200 points/ 50 points each)

  • You will have 4 objective exams covering textbook reading and lecture materials administered electronically in a computer lab.
  • Any student may take a missed exam within one week of the regularly scheduled exam date.  This privilege expires one week after the original exam date, i.e. if the exam is administered on Thursday, the following Wednesday is the last day you can take the exam.
  •  There are no make-up exams.

Postcard Research and Presentation (100 points)

  • Each student will complete a short research assignment over a chosen era of early United States History by creating a composite of a person of the time period, designing and writing a postcard from the person's perspective and presenting the postcard to the class.  Detailed instructions of the assignment and it's grading rubric will be posted in Canvas.

Bonus Points

  • Extra points will be awarded to students who miss 3 or fewer days of class
  • At the discretion of the instructor points may be awarded for student attendance/participation at extracurricular activities hosted by the university

Class Policies

Attendance

No grade will be given for attendance, but students who missed 3 or fewer classes will be awarded 5 bonus points at the end of the course.  Excessive tardiness (3) and leaving class early without prior approval will count as an absence.  Students who are absent on University business should inform the professor prior to the absence and make arrangements to submit course assignments early.

Cell Phone and other Electronic Devices

Turn off or silence all cell phones and other electronic devices that can potentially create a distraction before lecture starts.  If you receive a call during class, please excuse yourself and quietly leave the classroom before answering.

Dress

This is an academic environment please dress appropriately. Personal hygiene shows self-respect, please be mindful.

Course-related communication should occur by way of personal contact with the instructor.  Alternatively, students may call and leave messages on the instructor’s voice mail or send the instructor an email; this, however. does not constitute personal contact.
